While always intended as the second bedroom, this room was initially just another place to store stuff. The ceiling light fixture in place when I bought the house sucks, and will be replaced. The angle where the ceiling joins the wall eliminates a clean break between ceiling and wall. I will be forced to make the whole room a single light color and not texture the ceiling. I also plan to replace the worn and stained carpet with new carpet which will be matched in the hallway and the master bedroom, and hopefully wrapped down the stairs ending in the living room.
Here are two doors in need of painting and new hardware. The old register is ineffective as all the old registers in the house so I will need to make some modifications to accept a more modern register. I will also install all new switch and receptacle plates in a neutral ivory color.
Here's a closer look at the ugly ceiling lamp. That's going to be replaced.
Replacing the register is the most difficult part of this room. I can't find a direct replacement (the only similar sized devices I could find were air returns, which have no dampers). I settled on a somewhat smaller register. This requires some repair to make the wall opening smaller.
The old register went all the way to the floor, the new on ends about an inch above it. I needed to add a section of wallbase and quarter round to close the opening. I decided to miter cut the edges of the wallbase to frame the opening.
And here is the new register after all the painting was done.
I've replaced that cheezy overhead light with a somewhat more ordinary one. I also need window treatments since I threw away the cheap blinds. I hadn't realized how expensive curtains are until I started working on the downstairs rooms.
